East Sector units support host communities in health, education and sports

UNIFIL Eastern Sector units from China, India, Nepal and Spain have recently provided a wide range of support to local communities in the areas of health, education and sports in various villages around the South East.

While Chinese and Nepalese peacekeepers supported the villages of Ibl el Saqi and Meiss ej Jebel with COVID-19 prevention kits and medical supplies, Indian and Spanish peacekeepers donated school and sports supplies public schools and municipalities of Kfar Kela and Kfar Shouba respectively.

Moreover, with the support of three Spanish football teams – Atletico de Madrid, UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife – the Spanish peacekeepers were able to organize the first “Mediterranean Football Cup” in the village of El Adaysseh on February 20. Of the three competing teams (Spanish Peacekeepers, El Adaysseh, Ett Taibe and Shaqra), El Adaysseh’s team was the champion.

On the same occasion, the Spanish Blue Helmets also handed over a number of sports equipment and school supplies for the village school.

UNIFIL attaches great importance to its close ties with local communities in southern Lebanon in the performance of its essential tasks. Between essential operational tasks, UNIFIL peacekeepers regularly carry out various community activities – at the request of host communities – directly benefiting the local population.
